Addition with a View

Addition with a View

Pool Cabana, Pool, Hardscaping, Basement Remodel

Rising above rolling hills and dense woodlands, this brick home provides a welcoming retreat for its owners and guests. The vision for this addition was to extend living areas into the outdoors, joining existing classically inspired architecture, thoughtfully planned landscaping, and surrounding woods into a unified whole.

The project began with a complete remodel of an underused part of the home with the intention of creating a direct visual and spatial link with a pool pavilion, kitchen, and new basement recreation room. From there, stone steps descend to an inviting terrace featuring a bluestone deck and swimming pool. Beyond, Lutyens-inspired, circular stone steps create a focal point, inviting guests to continue onto the lawn, where council ring seating overlooks a stream and verdant valley below.

North of the pavilion, a garden path extends to a bench beneath an espaliered apple tree on an enclosing garden wall screening parking and drive beyond. Within these walls, a series of garden rooms and paths lead to a dining pavilion, sunken pool, and fire pit.

We would like to extend congratulations to our partners on this project, as the pool, pavilion, and walled garden received an Acanthus Award from the Chicago-Midwest Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art.
